Halloween & My Thieiving

Ahh it's finally Halloween.

No holiday event to properly celebrate it; completed it over a week ago. Runescape's been rather low on updates lately. All we got this week was another Postbag from the Hedge issue. That's the trouble with months with five weeks, there are only so many updates Jagex can promise in those monthly Behind the Scenes announcements. Usually runs dry by week 5.

Shame really, the monotony from skilling is really starting to get to me. There goes the momentum of my Thieving training... It's quite ironic how the skilling time freed up by the lack of updates is causing my training to slow down, instead of increasing my progress.

Although the seeds from those Master Farmers are helping out, I am considering playing the mini game, Sorceress's Garden, as an alternative to pickpocketing. It was a suggestion a Lvl 99 Thief had given to me, and I am not one who dismisses tips from skill masters that easily.

The screenshot of the Sorceress's Garden. A promising looking mini-
game indeed.

Mm, maybe I should give it a shot this weekend?

The Big 1OO

Sold all four thousand of my Ranarrs yesterday at an average price of 7.9k gp each.

Less than what I used to get, but since I'm now buying the seeds at a lower price, I've actually been able to increase profits slightly so it's all good. I was fortunate enough to trade with a guy selling 150 seeds at a discounted price.

The former sale has also fattened up my bank account quite considerably. I'm also pleased to say that I've finally reached the 100th rank for Farming, a goal I had been working towards since August.

It's a nice round number, but I'm planning to continue pushing my way towards the top. My next target for now would be rank 75. This is where things get difficult. The exp gap between each rank will be huge...

Stuff achieved today: Bleah! Nothing much.

Coincidentally, that Ranarr Seed trader also had Lvl 99 Farming. A nice, low two digit rank of 29.

Membership At Last!

Yayness, Kat finally became a member last night.

Although her avatar was still in the F2P city of Varrock when she logged in, my sis was awed just by the knowledge that she was actually in a members server. I encouraged her to look around and sample the game features membership made available before trying out the Farming skill.

My friends, Mat and DG, and I took her to the Castlewars arena. We probably should've picked a less crowded world, but I think she still had fun there.

Anyway, later today in the evening, I decided to teach her how to Farm. I think the little crash course went well. Kat's more or less mastered the basics and I've given her some low lvl seeds to start her out. I probably should've advised her to train her Thieving so that she can steal from Master Farmers, but I suppose that can wait.

The only screenshot I could produce for today's entry, my apologies.
Anywho, see? I have been Thieving more often to supply my sis with the
seeds.

Kat's school break has started so she's got a whole two months worth of free time to look forward to. Screw the homework she received, the girl probably doesn't have a worry in the world right now, while I'm still slugging it out with those assignments I mentioned in my previous entry.

Must try my best not to suffocate her with a pillow out of jealous rage tonight...

A Potential Farming Apprentice

School's been giving me a bit of trouble. No, this is not about me skipping the stupid celebrations on Tuesday.

It's just that very recently, numerous assignments, both new and old ones I hadn't taken care of before the exams, are being dumped on my lap. The two extra weeks of lessons which are eating into my break are also making things extra unbearable. Looking at this sorry predicament, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't envious of my sister, who will be going for her last day of school tomorrow.

Extra gaming time for her I guess. She'll need it since she's finally going to start on her Runescape membership soon. Must make a mental note to Thieve more seeds during my remaining pockets of free time.

As soon as my sis gets used to the rest of the members world, I hope to get her hooked to the Farming skill just like I did when the stat first came out. I admit it's unlikely, but I want her to become a Master Farmer one day. Not being as passionate about the game as I am, there's also a possibility of her ditching her membership after a few months.

But newbies are to be nurtured; I want her to succeed as a Runescape member. I pray that the extra content will sustain her interest in the months, and possibly years, which follow.

Yeah, Halloween 2007!

The Grim Reaper

Today was supposed to be the last day of school, but as rotten luck would have it, all students at my level are required to endure another two and a half weeks of lessons.

There was also some Thanksgiving celebration thing today in school, but I decided to just skip it and stay at home. Parents were willing to write me a letter, so it was all good until a classmate called me up this afternoon and told me that a Medical Certificate was required to get me out of trouble. My parents took me to a clinic on time though and got that MC; really close one there! And thanks again, Sean, for saving my ass.

The Grim reaper has his own personal House Portal, just North West of
Port Sarim!

Anyway, onto Runesape, the Halloween event was released early this year, just last night. I decided to wait till around 4.00pm today before trying it out when the Runescape servers are emptiest. Really hate doing stuff with a huge annoying crowd around.

Me getting entangled with a cobweb in the Grim Reaper's garden.

The event was great. My character had to run around the Grim Reaper's Mansion and clean it up, as well as perform various other tasks for him. The Reaper rewarded me with one of his spare hoods and also gave me the ability to use the new "Zombie Hand" emote.

The only holiday event left for 2007 is the one on Christmas. Unfortunately, I'll be away in Germany and Austria the whole time. Hope I come back on time, or better yet, get hold of an Internet Connection during my vacation.

I had to test out an obstacle course for the Reaper.

Who Says Thirteen Is Unlucky?

The Blessings Clan - An intimidating sight for any unprepared wanderer
in the Wilderness.

The weekend was just fantastic. I stayed up late last night to test out my recently acquired Level 99 Magic with Mat at Castle Wars.

We both came in as Ancient Mages and blasted all opponents into submission with powerful battle magic. We took much pleasure camping out at the top of the enemy castle, shooting down any players who popped up at the staircase.

Me neatly finishing off an enemy player with Ice Barrage.

One of the more memorable fights was when I climbed up the enemy castle walls, Ice Barraged and killed a Lvl 90 at the other end, took out a second and third player with a combination of Melee and Ancient Magicks, and finally KO-ed a newbie who came charging at me with a well aimed Dragon Dagger Spec. All this, without taking a single hit!

He never stood a chance against the thirteen simultaneous attacks made
on him.

Today's Pk trip was equally brilliant. We had a turn-up rate of 13 members, and we were able to overpower any stray Pkers or enemy clans which crossed our path. Zero casualties, plentiful Runite drops. An amazing feat which definitely served as a great morale boost for the entire Blessings Clan.

Someone should really shove a Dragon Scimitar up the ass of the fellow who said that thirteen is an unlucky number...

This Lvl 107 was unfortunate enough to log in right in the
middle of the clan. He was killed after a short chase.

Thief, Farmer & Spy

Four days into my Thieving training, and so far, it's going strong. I reached Lvl 80 yesterday and gained the ability to pickpocket Heroes.

Not sure what I can get by stealing from them, but I've decided to continue with the Master Farmers for their precious, precious seeds. I've started growing Wildblood hops, Strawberries and Watermelons thanks to this somewhat reliable supply. Doubt I'll be able to sustain my little cultivation since I sow faster than I steal, but the extra Farming exp will certainly help.

On a completely unrelated note, I met Btyhuntr, currently the 6th top
Farmer, just yesterday. Bask under his awesomeness.

Besides my usual stat raising, I'm also plotting against this clan I recently joined. I'm intending to join it in one of its Pk trips, and then get my real clan to ambush it. If all goes according to plan, I'll have their heads by next week, Saturday morning.

Currently, my leader, Tiz, is also doing some espionage of his own. I wonder how he's getting along with the clan he infiltrated. I've yet to hear of any developments from him yet. Stupid slacker.

Thievery

Since I have no intentions of continuing beefing up my Magic past 99 like I did with Farming, I've shortlisted a number of potential new stats to train.

Oh dear, I've been reduced to stealing from my fellow Master Farmers
now that I'm finished with Magic.

Mining, Smithing, Thieving, Melee Combat and Hunter were all the candidates, but I've finally decided this afternoon that pursuing a life of crime like my fellow bloggers, Kuemper and Vaskor, would be the most preferable option (rather ironic, since I sat through a neighbourhood police talk in school a few hours prior to making this decision).

I started this Thieving training immediately today, and even managed a level up to 79 while pickpocketting Master Farmers. So far, this skill has been providing me with a number of useful seeds such as Wildblood, Ranarr, Strawberry and Watermelon. It has certainly proven itself to not be a drain of resources, unlike the costly High Alchemy for Magic.

Guess who I saw while Thieiving? Jagex Mod Noldor! Haven't seen that
gold crown in ages.

Anyway before concluding this post, I'd like to thank my friend, Mat, for giving me an assortment of some rather handy gifts to congratulate me for reaching Lvl 99 Magic. He played a very nasty trick on me when I turned down part of his present because I felt bad. Mat told me to stand at a certain spot and not move at all, while he ran off.

Mat's idea of how to properly show off the Magic Cape Emote. He
was the one who started those fires.

His true intentions for this odd set of instructions became clear when the noted Pineapples which I had turned down (hey, he needs them more than I do!) suddenly appeared right next to me. I had no choice but to pick them up in the end. But thank you for your generosity anyway, Mat...

To Mat:

I've got 40k raw Lobsters stocked up in the bank. And I know you're making a loss by selling off the Lobsters you cooked and then buying raw ones at a higher price. So since I no longer need the Cooking exp, just drop me a pm when you're short on raws and I'll come by the Rogues' Den to trade with you. Good friends give and take, but frankly, I'm tired of being on the receiving end all the time.

It's time I give back. I won't accept a no for an answer.

15 October 2007

A Master Of Magic

My hours, days, weeks and months of repeatedly High Alching those stacks and stacks of bank notes ended at 3.00pm, this afternoon.

I've hit Level 99 Magic.

Jadedonce (Vik) and I at the Dark Wizards' Altar.

It was rather tricky trying to figure out the ideal location for the screenshot of the level up. My good friend, Viknesh, whom I asked to pose with me for the pic, was a free player. And therefore all members-only areas in Runescape were out of bounds, effectively limiting my choices. I still managed to pick out an excellent spot at the Dark Wizards' Altar, just South of Varrock.

The screenshot was a little tricky to get. Vik and I needed to switch to an empty server so that other players won't ruin the shot. We found a pretty good one when this newbie popped up and started fighting the Dark Wizards. He left after I offered to pay him 500gp as soon as the pic was taken. And don't worry, I kept to my word since he was such a nice guy.

I later visited the Magicians' Guild and bought a Magic Skill Cape. Its colours were nice, I might even consider buying a White Partyhat to match it.

Anyway, I'd like to thank all my friends for their encouragement throughout this long journey to 99. I'm also very grateful to Vik for taking some time off to be part of the screenshot. Thank you for being there, everyone.

Runescape's Character Classes

Was a little bored, so I decided to compile a list of the different character types in Runescape. I've also included a short description of them, as well as the views the other players have on these specific character groups.

The Overall Skiller - Used in other MMORPGs, the term generally refers to high leveled players who try to maximise all their stats. The Overall Skillers' all-round ability earn the admiration of the RS community.

The Level 3 Skiller - A term exclusive to Runescape, Level 3 Skillers are players who seriously train non-combat stats only. The ignorant half of the RS community generally isn't able to distinguish a bot or their fellow newbies from these type of players. On the other hand, Level 3 Skillers are still respected by many due to their dedication in sticking with low combat stats in spite of this being a handicap (a low combat level may make raising skills such as Agility quite difficult).

The Fighter - Level 120s with either low or mediocre non-combat stats fall into this category. Their ability to dish out high damage to their opponents make Fighters a particularly respected group of the RS community.

The Merchant - Players who constantly buy items and then later sell them for profit are labelled as Merchants. Being amongst the wealthiest of character classes, their riches have attracted both the jealousy and admiration of the RS community. Some of the more hardcore of these Merchants only focus on money making instead of stat training, and the great contrast between their immense riches and lousy skills heightens the envy other players feel towards them.

The Honour Playerkiller - Honour Playerkillers (or Pkers) live by a strict set of rules when in the Wilderness. Protection Prayers, teaming in non-multi combat zones and targetting vulnerable players such as Abyss Runecrafters are a big no-no for these warriors. The RS community generally respects people of this character type due to their willingness to limit their strength in order to "fight fair".

The Resourceful Playerkiller - In contrast to the Honour Pkers, Resourceful Pkers pay little regard to this unofficial set of Wilderness rules. They exploit every little advantage they have to defeat their opponents, but fall short of breaking actual Runescape rules such as luring and other acts of dishonesty. Much of the RS community, especially Honour Pkers, view this class with distaste.

The Scammer - Possibly the most hated of all character types, Scammers compromise their integrity for financial gain, and cheat other Runescapers out of their money. The rest of the RS community and the Jagex staff are always in a constant struggle to drive this band of players to extinction.

The Elite - Possessing the wealth of a Merchant, the might of a Fighter and the stats of a Skiller, the Elites are the most successful of players. Elites are not to be confused with rich Overall Skillers, as unlike the latter, the former dominates the top spots in the highscores(maybe top 200?) in multiple stats. Generally, the RS community holds them in high regard, but the few Runescapers belonging to this class have often been accused of being both proud and having an unhealthy obsession with the game.

The Roleplayer - A universal term in other MMORPGs which refers to players who actively try to become part of the game's storyline(s) and history. Roleplayers visualise themselves as their own Runescape avatars, especially when Questing. True Roleplayers actually speak and behave in character (such as the avoidance of slang for a game set in the Medieval Ages) all the time, but they are a dying breed. Feelings towards this group are varied, ranging from them being "geeky" or "fun". Many do not even know that they exist.

The Newbie - Clad in Bronze and other cheap equipment, Newbies are a common sight all over Runescape. There is much potential in them. Will they some day join the ranks of the Elite, or perhaps be reduced to a despised Scammer? The RS community generally looks down on Newbies due to their incompetence in the game. However, there are still many who take a more sympathetic approach and help nurture these greenhorns into fully fledged Runescapers.

I hope I was accurate on the details of these various groups. It's not very often I do little guides such as this. I guess I could've included screenshots to depict the typical appearance of these character classes, but I got lazy. Hope you enjoyed reading it anyway.

Hidden Features

My exam results are back, and I'm quite pleased with them in general.

I fell short of a number of my targets, but I still scored decently high grades. The usual Chinese and History could use more work though. On the otherhand, I've done exceptionally well in all five Mathematics and Sciences. But I don't really feel like listing my grades right now, and would rather go talking about the rest of the day.

My fully grown Jade Vine.

Remember that Jade Vine I recently planted? During its first 24 hours, the little thing remained a tiny sapling, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find it fully grown when I logged on during the afternoon. It must've had some sort of crazy growth spurt while I was asleep on the second night.

Anyway, checking the plant's health gave me 1.5k Farming exp. Not too generous, but upon doing some research of the Jade Vine, I found out (thanks to a thread in the Runescape forums by fellow RS blogger Primefalcon) that when allowed to grow wild, the plant can be battled with again and finishing it off will grant the player 3k Slayer exp.

This will, of course, mean that the poor vine will end up being killed, but it'll drop another seed which you can later use to re-grow a new plant. And by repeating this cycle of sowing, growing and killing every few days, players can gain quite a significant amount of exp overtime. Definitely very helpful.

Several parts of the Wizard's corpse.

Also, although I had failed to mention this in my previous entry, the quest, Back to My Roots, also allows you to fully resolve the ending of this other quest, Hand In The Sand. A murder of a Wizard took place in the latter, but his fellow Magicians' Guild members could not give him a proper burial because all they could find was the poor guy's severed hand.

The murdered Wizard's burial.

It turns out that his murderer had chopped up his body and sent several parts of it to the giant wild Jade Vine growing in Karamja (the maze). I was able to retrieve these missing body parts by killing the various creatures living around the plant today, and later returned them to the Guild.

I was also able to locate more evidence to convict the murderer, and received some Runes for my efforts. Those Mages at the guild were sweet enough to invite me over for the funeral as well...

A Treat To All Farmers

Changes have been made to last week's shop update, and Pineapples can now be bought from Arhein, up to 40 a day.

And I found this funny because less than an hour prior to the release of this improvement, I was actually remarking to fellow RS Blogger, Fweese, about how Jagex was not going to do anything about the removal of Pineapples from those Charter Ship Traders' stock. But seriously though, it is very gratifying to know that the Jagex team pays attention to all player concerns. Anyway, with this problem now resolved, I'm planning to let that thread I started last week die.

The generous rewards I got for completing the quest. The Jade Vine seed
can be seen on the left side of the reward message.

Farmers also got another treat during this week's batch of updates. A Master Quest, Back To My Roots, involving the Farming skill was released.

I had to help out Gardener Horacio to obtain a cutting of a rare plant known as the Jade Vine, so that he could grow it in his garden. There were two main problems. I needed to find out where to find the Vine to get the cutting from, as well as provide an effect means of storing the cutting
(it dies fast when exposed to air).

My character navigating through the gigantic vine maze.

The latter was easily settled after running Wizard Cromperty a few errands, who later told me that I needed to store the Jade Vine cutting in a pot, and then air tight the entire thing with a simple lid. Locating the Vine wasn't that hard either. The directions Farmer Garth gave me were straightforward enough, and the plant was too huge to miss anyway.

I had to fight my way through the hordes of creatures living within the
giant vine before reaching the trunk.

What proved to be the greatest challenge in the quest, was navigating through the giant Jade Vine to reach its trunk (I could only obtain a cutting from there). This living maze was infested with aggressive monsters, such as Giant Ants, Giant Wasps and Giant Frogs. Thankfully, my food supply lasted through the entire journey to the trunk, and I was able to get the root cutting Horacio had requested for.

My character carefully trying to obtain a root cutting from the Jade Vine.

The lazy Gardener still wanted me to grow it for him though. And after the Jade Vine had reached maturity, the thing started attacking the both of us. With my trusty Dragon Hatchet and an inventory filled with Sharks and Lobsters, I was able to subdue it.

Horacio also gave me a Jade Vine seed (from the plant I killed) for my troubles, which I later planted in a new special patch. According to him, if I trim the vine frequently enough, the plant won't go homicidal on me again.

Me battling the Level 167 Jade Vine.

Currently, it's still a baby sapling and I've left it in the care of Horacio. Grow well, little guy.

A Business Partner

My Partyhat merching is starting to flourish again. I made 5 million literally overnight by buying a Yellow Partyhat for 209 million just before bedtime last night, and then selling it earlier today for 214 million gp.

Me selling the Yellow Partyhat.

My friend, Manutham1, also a Partyhat merchant, is assisting me with this very lucrative business. I informed her about Rare prices last night, and she returned the favour when I got back from school by telling me about the Yellow's rise. We are now helping each other out by keeping each other updated with Partyhat prices.

I've managed to find out more about Manutham today as well. We started out as Farmer friends since we kept bumping into each other whilst doing our Ranarr Weed harvesting rounds. And then we later realised that the two of us were also active merchants in the Rare trade. But this afternoon, I also found out that we both were Singaporeans, which was really cool considering the number of Runescapers who originate from that country.

An amazing coincidence indeed. May we continue to make millions in the many Partyhat price fluctuations to come...

An Action Packed Weekend

Mat and I, passing through one of the many traps of the' maze.

I spent some time with Mat at the Rogues' Den today. He made it all the way to the end of the maze on his second attempt. He got a pair of Rogue Boots to show for it too.

It's not a very exp efficient Mini-Game, but it was certainly a refreshing half an hour break from all that high alching. Speaking of which, progress in my Magic training has been speedy these past couple of days. I've exceeded my initial expectations by reaching Lvl 97 today, two days earlier than my planned date.

I also went for a Pking trip with my clan. Mat wasn't around so I took the task of leading my fellow members into the Wilderness. The clan event proved to be an overall success. We got two Full Rune kills, and quite a number of other stray pkers fell victim to our blades and battle Magic.

My only regret was not taking enough screenshots, and not to mention the Lvl 100+ clan which later ambushed us. The casualty rate was still minimal, thankfully.

One of our victims during the trip. This pker is being a very good sport,
in spite of being killed. Sorry for looting your items, buddy.

I owe the successful raid to sheer luck. Mat and I have decided to do a little espionage in enemy clans by applying as members, sizing up its strength, and then turning against it, with the help of the rest of the Blessings forces. If this plan of ours works out, we can expect much more lucrative Pk trips for Blessings in the near future.

My Exams Are Over!

It's finally over! I sat for my last two papers yesterday, and even had the whole of today off. I'm enjoying every minute of my three-day weekend.

Me soloing the Giant Mole.

I paid a visit to the Giant Mole this afternoon with my friend, Air Dragon. Although technically a Boss Monster, the two of us were still able to kill the thing with ease. We were even able to take turns soloing it. My only gripe about Giant Mole hunting would be the creature's tendency to burrow away after it's health goes below a certain point. It was really annoying running around its burrow, trying to find and finish the mole off.

Air tried running away for a while, so that the Giant Mole would attack
me instead. Don't think I didn't see that, Air.

The drops aren't that good either. The Mole Skins and Mole Claws we got could be exchanged for Bird's Nests from Wyson, but the stingy gardener only gave us nests which contained low lvled seeds.

Later in the evening, I was fortunate enough to buy back my Red Partyhat. I sold it a few weeks earlier for 253.5 million gp. It jumped to a little 280 million a mere fortnight after that, so yeah, I really shouldn't have traded it away so soon, even if the hat's sale did already earn me a decently fat profit.

Yeah! good to have you
back, Reddie.

Its price has dipped about 10 million now, so I decided to quickly buy one back for 273 million gp. I still have doubts about being able to profit with this new Partyhat, but I'm really glad to have it back. It felt weird not wearing the Red for so long. May Lady Luck smile on me once more. I could use the extra cash to sustain my intense Magic training.

Where'd My Pineapples Go?

A couple of updates were released yesterday, sometime in the evening.

The town of Edgeville, after its graphical update.

It was Edgeville's turn to receive a complete makeover. Being a small town, the update wasn't as large-scale as the one in Varrock several months back, but Jagex has once again done a brilliant job in improving the graphics. The area has a much fresher look now.

The updated Edgeville Bank

Sadly, my compliments for October's first batch of updates end there. The second part of last evening's update aimed to stop bots from "auto buying" items from stores. Jagex achieved this by separating all of Runescape's shops into two sections. One which provides an unlimited stock of items (which usually cost a shit load), and another section which sells the items players trade to the store.

The new shop interface. Notice the two tabs, "Main Stock" and "Player
Stock" near the top.

So here's the problem; shops which sell stuff such as cheap Runes are now charging much higher, making the whole unlimited stock thing completely useless since no player, bot or human, in their right mind would pay that much. And the cheaper player trading section? Nobody would be stupid enough to actually sell off their Runes there either, so it'll probably remain permanently empty.

Also, besides introducing this new system, Jagex has also completely removed certain key items from a number of stores. The Charter Ship Traders, for example, used to sell some pretty useful wares such as Soda Ash and Pineapples, which could be conviniently bought and used to make Molten Glass and Super Compost respectively. Currently though, those much sought after items, plus several more I'm too fed up with to name, are gone.

Definitely one of the more positive responses my thread received. The
poster's a forum Moderator too! Click the image for a larger view.

I've even started a thread in the Recent Updates forum about the problem. It's been there for less than a day, but has already accumulated over 200 posts, and not to mention quite a number of supporters.

I know for a fact that the Jagex team looks through player feedback in the forums. Hopefully, they will notice the unpopularity of certain aspects of the new shop update, and actually bother to rectify the problem.

A Forgotten Tome

Had some difficulty sleeping last night. I kept thinking of the remaining tests I had to take this week. My mind also wandered to Runescape.

A long time ago, whenever you log in to your Runescape account on the website (not in-game), there'd be a little notice there which tells you the day when you had your last password change. For quite some time, the date "14 April 2004" kept appearing whenever I signed in, and since I had never changed my password before during that period, I could only conclude that the 14th of April was the day my first password was created. Or put simply, the day my avatar was created - my birthday in Gielinor.

However, this memory of not changing the password at all during that period of time, is faded. Truthfully, I've been celebrating my Runescape birthday these past two years without actually knowing for sure whether the 14th of April was the actual date of my avatar's creation.

I pondered about this last night. And then it suddenly hit me. I recalled keeping a journal for a few months, when I was 12. Could I have written about my first days as a Runescaper there? And more importantly, will it provide any information at all about the exact date I started playing?

I searched my drawers, and found the little book. I flipped to April 14th's entry and there it was, near the bottom of the page in scrappy handwriting.

"...Kathryna introduced to me a new cool website. It was www.runescape.com. I signed up and my username is Timothy Gold."

A splendid find in this long forgotten tome. I am really amazed with this discovery.

It's also inspired me to start my own diary (no, not another website). Besides confirming the true date of my character's birth, the book has also given me some insight on my way of thinking three years ago. The contrast between then and now is very apparent.

Yes, I think I will start a journal. A record of real life events and feelings would be a far deeper account about how my life is like at 15. I wonder how I'll see my present self another three years from now, when I'm 18...
